We hope this message finds everyone doing well. As your Family Reunion Planning Committee, we regret to announce that our 2022 Austin Family Reunion, scheduled to take place in Chattanooga, is being postponed until next year, July 2023.

Unfortunately, due to low family registrations, we were forced to postpone the reunion. We are sure you are just as disappointed as we are, we were really looking forward to seeing everyone after not having the reunion since 2018, four long years!

We are encouraging all family members to start sending your registrations in now. We have another year to make payments and make every effort to help this be one of the biggest and best reunions ever!! To accomplish this, we need everyone’s help. Please invite your immediate family members and friends to make plans to attend our reunion the last week in July.

Happy Veteran's Day!!!

On November 11th Americans honored those brave men and women who have served in the military. It all started on November 11, 1918 when an Armistice between the Allied forces of World War I and Germany went into effect. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th Armistice Day in recognition of the end of the War that was to end all Wars. In 1938, the U.S. Congress passed an Act declaring November 11, Armistice Day, a national holiday. In 1954, after World War II, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed and the Congress approved changing the name Armistice Day to Veterans Day, honoring all Americans who had served in all wars.

But the celebrations we have today do not do justice to the African Americans who have fought and died for America, in spite of the racism and segregated practices that have denied us full and equal treatment. Consider the following The Hall of Fame of African Americans who have served and in many instances, died for this country.

Crispus Attucks, son of a slave, first American casualty of the Revolutionary War. March 5, 1770; Nurse Susie King Taylor, who in the 1800s when it was illegal for African Americans to be educated, snuck in lessons at an underground school which she put with her passion to help others. She met and worked along side Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross.

During the Civil War, Lewis Martin of the 29th U.S. Colored Infantry who lost a leg and an arm following the Battle of the Crater in July 1864; the Buffalo Soldiers, as the Colored Soldiers of the 10th Calvary became known, who fought both in the Civil War and the Indian Wars where they got the name ” Buffalo” from Native Americans; and Corporal Freddie Stowers who led the all-Black 371st Infantry Regiment in France in a successful battle against German troops and was recommended for the Medal of Honor which was not given to him until 70 years later awarded posthumously to his family.

We also remember Corporal John T. Van Rensalier of the 350th HQ. Battalion who was awarded the French Legion of Honor in WWI; Doris “Dorie” Miller, a Mess Steward in the U.S. Navy, became the first African American to win the Navy Cross based on service at Pearl Harbor in WWII. Let us not forget African American women like Colonel Margaret Barley serving in WWI and fighting for integrated military housing when Blacks were still fighting and living in a segregated army.

Let us remember Colonel Charles Young, the 3rd African American to graduate from West Point Military Academy and the first African American to reach the rank of “Colonel” in the U.S. Army; or the Tuskegee Airman, Colored fighter pilots who never lost a plane they were escorting during WWII and paved the way for more than 1.2 million African Americans to enter the service during and following that War.

We remember with pride our pioneering Black Generals like Benjamin Oliver Davis, Sr., U.S. Army and first African American to obtain that rank in the U.S. Army, and his son Benjamin Oliver Davis, Jr. ,U.S. Air Force as well as General Daniel “Chappy” James, fighter pilot U.S. Air Force; and General Colin Powell, City College of New York ROTC graduate who rose to become a four star general and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, twice, as well as the first African American Secretary of State under President George Bush.

Of the 3470 Medals of Honor given out since the beginning of this award, 89 have been given to African Americans and the first African American to receive one was William Carney on July 18, 1863.

So this Veterans Day, all African Americans have a very special and proud history to celebrate, recognizing that among those we honor and remember are our own countless “Band of Brothers and Sisters” that must not be forgotten in the first of Parades and Holiday Sales. “And still we rise.”

So You Want to Learn About Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free. Now, 155 years later, people in cities and towns across the U.S. continue to mark the occasion with celebrations. Juneteenth, an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s.

But in recent years, and particularly following nationwide protests over police brutality and the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and other African-Americans this year, there is a renewed interest in the day that celebrates freedom.

Here’s a brief guide to what you should know about Juneteenth.

What is Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, about two months after the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Va., Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.

The holiday received its name by combining June and 19. The day is also sometimes called “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day.”

How is it celebrated?

The original celebration became an annual one, and it grew in popularity over the years with the addition of descendants, according to Juneteenth.com, which tracks celebrations. The day was celebrated by praying and bringing families together. In some celebrations on this day, men and women who had been enslaved, and their descendants, made an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston.

Celebrations reached new heights in 1872, when a group of African-American ministers and businessmen in Houston purchased 10 acres of land and created Emancipation Park. The space was intended to hold the city’s annual Juneteenth celebration.

Today, while some celebrations take place among families in backyards where food is an integral element, some cities, like Atlanta and Washington, hold larger events, like parades and festivals with residents, local businesses and more.
Galveston has remained a busy site for Juneteenth events over the years, said Douglas Matthews, who has helped coordinate them for more than two decades. He said the city usually has about 15 events, including parades, barbecues, musical performances and a beauty contest, beginning in the first week of June. Combined, the events draw about 10,000 people in total, he said.

Dear Family,

We hope this letter finds everyone doing well. During this time of crisis and national emergency, we realize many of our family members have been negatively affected by the economic impact of the Coronavirus.

The Golden Girls and The Family Reunion Planning Committee have been closely watching and monitoring the developments of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It has been reported that it is highly possible that this situation will continue throughout the summer and fall months. As much as we hate to postpone the Family Reunion, we must put our well-being and safety first. Although most states are beginning to lift restrictions, we don’t want to put any of our family members at risk!!  It goes without saying that the safety and health of all of our family members is our top priority!! Therefore, we regret to announce that the 2020 Austin Family Reunion is being postponed until 2022.

If you have already paid your Family Reunion registration fee, your money will roll over for the Family Reunion in 2022. You are already paid in full. We suggest that you use the next 13 months to save for your hotel stay. For those family members who have not completed paying your Family Reunion Registration, there is good news for you, you now have 13 extra months to finish your payment plan. For those family members who have not started making your family reunion registration payments, there is also good news for you!! You now have the opportunity to participate in the Family Reunion Payment Plan. You have 13 months to make your payments!!

We realize some family members are out of work, but even a small monthly payment will help so you don't have to pay the entire amount all at once. Family, those payments are as low as $14.00 a month per adult, which is $3.50 a week!!! This is totally doable and affordable for everybody!!

For family members who plan to start making payments on your 4-night hotel stay, your total bill for the week will average $675.00, including tax. If you break that amount down into 13 payments, you can save as little as $52.00 a month!! Family that $52.00 a month breaks down to $13.00 a week. We were able to book the same hotel, Embassy Suites, at a lower rate than we paid in Atlanta in 2018. Our hotel rate for this family reunion will be $144.00 a night. If you have already made reservations, your reservations will be rolled over to the new dates. You don't need to do anything else at this time. Please hold on to all confirmation numbers as a safety precaution. If you have not made your hotel reservations, you may do so by calling the Embassy Suites Chattanooga. Be sure to tell them you are with the Austin Family reunion so you can get our Special Family Reunion Rate!!

Family please don’t worry about a thing. The Golden Girls and The Planning Committee are committed and dedicated to making our reunion the very BEST! We will continue the planning process to ensure everything will be in place and ready to go for July 2022. Remember family, Family Reunions are centered around closeness with family and friends. The 2020 Austin Family Reunion will be held in Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Reunion will be a 5 day 4 night event. You will check in the hotel on Thursday July 30th and Check out of the hotel on Monday August 3, 2020. You will be able to extend your stay if you desire. Dates are available a couple of days before July 30th and couple days after August 3rd.

This will allow family members the opportunity to spent time together, meet new family members, strengthen family ties and participate in many of the exciting events available in Chattanooga.

Family Prayer Line

Family Prayer Line!

“The Family that Prays together, Stays together.” The importance of prayer is affirmed throughout the Bible. As a family, we should be committed to praying for each other. Some family members have shown an interest in our family praying together. Several family Deacons and other family members have volunteered to lead us in Prayer. All family members are encouraged to call in and be a part of the Prayer Line.

Anyone desiring prayer for a loved one who is ill, facing surgery, hospitalized, or in a Nursing Home, can request prayer on the Family Prayer Line. The Prayer Line can also be used to lift family members up who are experiencing special events in their lives such as couples getting married, celebrating wedding anniversaries, celebrating births of children and other special occasions. Family Deacons will be available to pray with you whenever individual or family needs occur. The Deacons will take turns being on call each month so you will always be able to reach someone to pray with you and for you.

We will have our Family Prayer Line Call every 4th Sunday at 8 P.M. every month. Please contact us to get the Family Prayer Line Number and Access Codes.

The first edition was published and distributed at The 1st Family Reunion in Virginia Beach in 2008. Henry Austin, Sr. is the author of this priceless book of our family history.
